Sacred signs & symbols
- From the very beginning the Romans related 'signs' to religious ceremony and the worship of gods.
- Negative sign (bad signs) such as the entrails of sacred animals, the movement of snakes and the flight of birds, were important, as they were seen to be decisive elements of government decision.
- One example of these signs is the founding of the city Rome. Two twin brothers Romolus and Remus were twins who set out on a journey to the top of the Palatine and Aventine hills. Remus came across six vultures flying in formation, which was a sign.
- The sacred symbols of the Ancient Romans were: earth, sea, sun, sky and all elements of nature, as they worshipped them as a god.
